Chalet Rental - Snowmobile Tour

MARCH 31st - APRIL 1st 2013

This was at least my 5th stay at Riverfront Chalets, but the 1st one with the goal of snowmobiling Central Newfoundland in mind. Paul (Owner/Operator) had mentioned to me before that Central Newfoundland has some great snowmobiling to offer and we should consider coming out for a tour sometime. We usually make the 4 hour drive to the West Coast for our sledding trips and never really took in much snowmobiling in Central Newfoundland, despite living here. Despite not so great snow conditions along the highway, Paul insisted that there was lots of snow in the Hodges Hill / Gaff areas, and terrain to offer a variety of riding. Let me tell you, he was right! There was loads of snow everywhere, on the trails, in the woods, on the bogs. We had to awesome days of riding with Paul. The first day he took us straight to the top of Hodges, and what a view! absolutely perfect day with a stunning view overlooking Central Newfoundland from 570 meters up. We could see all the way to the Gaff Topsails. Managed to get in a few hill climbs and then we were off to see some other areas. Paul took us to numerous areas to play around, whether it was snow covered bogs with powder drifts to bust, open hills to climb, back country chalet for lunch, or my highlight of the trip, making our own trail through the treed hillsides and valleys. There was so much snow in the woods that after one stuck I stepped off my sled and went past my waist in snow. Picking through the treeline, we even got to see a Moose making its own tracks through the forest right along side us.

After an awesome and satisfied day of riding, we got back to the chalet and BBQ'd up a great late supper then relaxed in the hot tub. Nothing better after a great day of riding. As mentioned in all other reviews here, the chalets are still as warm, cozy, and inviting as the first time I stayed here approximately 4 years ago and we all had a great sleep in preparation for our second day of riding.

The second day included a group of beginners who had never been on sleds before. Paul managed to get them up Hodges Hills as well to enjoy the views and then we spent the rest of the day covering a lot of territory, and enjoying the scenery. Paul was an excellent guide and really made the trip for us. There is so much we would have missed if we had tried to guide ourselves.

We all had a great time and will definitely be returning in the future for many more snowmobiling trips. The area more than surpassed our expectations and our only regret is not taking advantage of this opportunity earlier. It's a shame we only saw 4-5 sleds the entire 2 days but it also was good in a way since all the areas we traveled to were untouched and ready to be tore up.

We just returned from this trip and were already thinking about the next one. If you enjoy snowmobiling and the outdoors in general, you should give this a try. You won't regret it. Thanks for the awesome snowmobile trip Paul. See you next time.

Thanks again Paul,

Mark, Des, Andrew. Joe and I had the repeat pleasure of free riding with our friend Paul Rose, the owner of Riverfront and the Ambassador of snowmobiling in Central Newfoundland, truly a great Father and Son multi-generational experience that will not be forgotten. Having made the mandatory West Coast pilgrimage two weeks ago my sledding' Buddy Des and I asked each other why drive the extra kilometers when you can experience the greatest terrain you could ever ask to ride minutes from the best accommodations anywhere in Atlantic Canada. Listen to Paul's Blog his report on Snow Conditions are truly accurate, 8" of fresh spring powder today, the season is not done in Central wow!

Thanks from all of us.

Just came back from a weekend in the Chalets and snowmobile tour (Mar.15-17).
Had a great time!! Chalets were beautiful and very accomodating as usual. We've stayed there a couple of times before, but this was our first winter weekend. The snowmobile tour was great. We had some mechanical issues, but Paul and the others on the tour were very patient and helpful. My daughter celebrated her 19th birthday there with us. She rented one of Paul's machines and although it was a different experience for her she enjoyed it. Thanks to Paul for helping her out in the rough spots :) Although she's 19 it was still a bit nerve wrecking for me lol.
The hot-tub after a long day of riding was sooo nice.
Overall great experience, would highly recommend it!!

We arrived in Grandfalls January 21st, 2013 with high expectations of lots of snow , we booked the riverfront chalets and a snowmobile tour for 2 days . The conditions along the highway and in Grandfalls were very discouraging , Also we stopped into town to pick up supply's for our stay, and the local residents were encouraging us to go more west to find the snow as they thought the snowmobiling conditions in Grandfalls were horrible because of the amount of Snow in town , well let me tell you that DO NOT go by the conditions close to the highway or in the town of Grandfalls because Paul and the rest of the gang from riverfront chalets will bring you to the snow and let you have the time of your life , myself and my buddies were very thankful that we stuck it out and gave Riverftont Chalets a chance and never ventured on further to the west coast !

We had an excellent stay at the Chalet (Jan 21st-23rd). We were warned/told by the locals the snow conditions were poor. But this turned out not to be the case! We found lots of great riding areas with many feet of soft snow. Paul's tour was top notch. He brought us to many great riding areas, and broke up the day with some really good soup at his cabin. All in all we had a fantastic couple of days riding and will hopefully be going back in the near future.

This was our third trip in two years and, once again, we had an awesome time. The idea of going ski-dooing seemed insane but Paul trailered our snowmobiles in Aspen Brook Road about km and we hit snow! We dropped the machines and hit the trails. The riding was awesome with a nice variety of old roads, woods trails and ponds. It was hard to believe that there was so much snow in the back-country compared to what you see driving along the TCH. There was actually 3-4 inches of fresh powder with light flurries throughout the day

The day was not over when the snowmobiling was done. After supper, we enjoyed a relaxing soak in the hot-tub with the river flowing in the background - what a view! It was so nice that we went back for another soak around midnight.

Awesome trip - we are already looking at the calendar trying to figure out when we can go again!

We all had a wonderful experience on our two day skidoo expedition - Feb. 20 & 21st, 2012. The accomadations at the chalet were more than had been advertized & more than what we expected. Paul & Joy were perfect hosts, very professional, but friendly. During the morning of day one, two more skidoos - a family of four - joined us on our trip. We traveled the Hodges Hill Guided Tour and we had a delicious hot meal at Paul's back country cabin. It was our choice to have the prepared meal inside or outdoors. On the second day, we spent 7 1/2 hours exploring back country trails, lakes, and Miller Town Junction. At the time the groomed trails were not overly favorable (many yes ma'ms). However our experienced tour guide, Paul, guided us through unbeaten trails and new snow. At the half way point during our trip we had a open fire and a boil up and again it was our choice of an inside or outside lunch. We all enjoyed the trip more than we ever imagined and we are looking very forward to doing it again in 2013.

Three terrific days of snowmobiling fun, February 5-8, 2012. Plenty of snow, some fresh powder, blue sky and sunshine during the day and the amazing full moon rising on the trip back to the chalets. A run to remember! Paul went above and beyond with providing excellent guiding service, tailored to the experience and abilities of his riders. His knowledge of the region is impressive and we appreciated that he took forestry roads and trails to avoid the un-groomed and extremely rough railbed. And of course it's always good to soothe the tired body in the hot tub! We are looking forward to a return trip this season with our adult kids from Nova Scotia. Always a great time at Riverfront Chalets! Thanks Paul and Joy!

After staying and sledding twice already at River Front Chalets, I finally got to enjoy them with my wife who was very happy and impressed with her stay. We booked 2 nights in April not expecting to do any sledding but much to our surprise Paul informed us he would be able to get us in to Hodges Hill for a day on the sled! Our sled is broken but no worries as Paul and Joy had a great quality rental available that was well equipped with a good track able to handle the back country conditions we experienced. We were absolutely thrilled to get one more ride on skidoo this season. And by the looks of the snow in there a few days ago there is lots of time for another few runs! Paul and Joy have some of the best snowmobiling in NL right in their own backyard! I really enjoyed the fact that for all 5 of the days I have spent so far in the country with Paul on the sleds I could count the number of other sleds I hae seen on just one hand.......you pretty much have it to yourself to enjoy with no crowds!!! Can't recommend River Front Chalets enough....this is definitly our favourite getaway destination in NL!!! See you again soon Paul and Joy!

Thanks Paul & Joy for a great weekend of skidooing this past weekend (April 9 & 10, 2011). Hard to believe there is still so much snow up there, when there is so little on the Avalon. Hodge's Hill area & Gaff Topsails look good until May! Spring snow conditions are making for good traction (and few stucks) all the way to the summits on Hodge's.

The beauty of this mountain is its variety of slopes, everyone from beginners to extreme sledders can enjoy and challenge themselves amongst the open glades, or in the tighter treed Burandt styled climbs. Paul can show you some awesome back country tracks that circle the mountain in a series of wicked tree lined climbs and descents. Thanks again for the hospitality, hope to get back soon!

I visited riverfront along with some friends on 27-Mar-2011. Paul gave us a fabulous tour around Hodge's Hill and made sure we had a lot of fun. It was hard to believe that snow conditions could be so good for the end of March! Looking forward to the next trip already and would love to get back to enjoy the Gaff Topsails in April. By the way, you won't find better accomodations and beautiful scenery to help perfect your vacation!

Don't know how you guys managed to pull it off, but there was better snow conditions this weekend (Mar 25-27) than we had the last 2 times we were out this winter (the previous 2 times had excellent snow as well).....lots of powder with a good solid base underneath meant we could go anywhere, absolutely perfect for going off trail and into the woods for a bit of fun. Based on what we saw this weekend, I would imagine you should have another 3 solid weeks (or more) of excellent sledding, now to just figure out a way to make it back for one last sledding trip before its all gone. And if we don't manage to get back this winter, we will be seeing you this summer for a ride down the exploits!!!
Thanks again Paul, Joy, Heidi & Jack for your excellent hospitality!

Visited riverfront on 27-Mar-11 and went on the Hodges Hills Tour with Paul. Snow conditions were amazing. There was lots of powder but did not get stuck much at all (perfect amount). Paul was an excellent guide and was able to sense our level of skill. He adjusted the tour as we went to ensure we had maximum fun. The tour offered several different styles of riding that kept our interest at a peak. Also, accommodations were the best I have ever seen for a chalet.

Just imagine, it's Easter weekend the sky's were clear and sunny and the trails had plenty of snow for snowmobiling. What a weekend it was! The chalets were warm and inviting with a beautiful view of the Exploits. Saturday my husband went off on a Guided tour which included a delicious bowl of home made soup. What more could you want!

Thanks for a great weekend Joy, Paul, Erica and Jason, can't wait to return this summer to check out the white water rafting.

Our stay with you was all class A from the chalets, to the snowmobile tour. Never before have I stayed anywhere that the owner would come to visit you at your room and sit down and have a yarn, you are treated more like a friend there than a guest, cant wait to return for another trip, thanks Paul you are an extremly good host, and became a new friend

Paul and Joy were our hosts for a most enjoyable weekend snowmobiling in Central Newfoundland. The first day we conquered Hodges Hills and day two was a tour across the Gaff Topsails. We were pleased to get great snow conditions for the end of March and even saw a caribou herd on the Gaff. Paul showed us some great riding places such as Mary March Brook that could be a very interesting play spot for next season. The accommodations were 10 out of 10. The new chalets are warm and welcoming with all you need for a perfect stay. From the Jacuzzi tub to the relaxing sofas and a fully equipped kitchen and BBQ, each chalet is ideal to prepare a great meal. And to top is all off, the hot tub overlooking the Exploits River is an amazing way to unwind after a day of great snowmobiling. Paul and Joys tours and accommodation are second to none. The tour to Hodges Hills and the Gaff topsails is definitely one of the top three snowmobile destinations in Central NL. I cant wait to go back. Thanks Paul and Joy for a great trip.

Awesome weekend! First class chalets and excellent services. The snowmobile tour was fantastic packed with scenic trails and wildlife. Joy had prepared a homemade meal which Paul warmed up for us when we stopped for lunch. Paul catered to our every need and made sure our ride was enjoyable and safe. When we got home, the hot-tub was unbelievable - after all day on the trail, a soak in the tub eliminated all the aches & pains. Overall, a fabulous getaway ... we are already booked for another snowmobile trip next winter AND are looking forward to our first rafting trip in August as well.

Belatedly we are writing to let you know how wonderful our trip was and how much we enjoyed staying in the Chalet. We stayed in March when the snow was still on the ground. You took us snowmobiling and snow-shoeing and we had a fabulous time. We loved the chalet and will be back very soon. Your knowledge of the local area and the time you spent with us made our trip very memorable. Thank you Paul and Joy and see you again real soon - we'll be back before you know it for the summer season.
